Mazovia is the historical and contemporary heart of Poland, the main thoroughfares of Europe cross here linking the West with the East. That is why Mazovia is a significant center of tourist attractions in Poland. Cultural tourism intermingles here with active tourism, including water tourism, riding, cycling and walking, as well as business tourism. The historical location and importance of this region forced people to build castles and watchtowers, which still can be admired following the path of the Dukes of Mazovia. Over the centuries, the culture of Mazovia varied, mainly through changes to the boundaries with other regions, including the incorporation of part of Podlasie and Kurpie and the lands of Radom related principally to Małopolska. One third of Mazovia are green areas, among them the Kampinos National Park, 9 landscape parks, 171 nature reserves and 62 protected landscape areas. This gives amazing possibilities for hiking, biking and horseback riding on numerous designated routes and thematic paths. Mazovia is also attractive because of the many regular events such as knight tournaments at the castles in Iłża, Liw, Ciechanów and Czersk, Chopin concerts at Żelazowa Wola, the birthplace of the great composer, as well as in Warsaw strongly associated with him, folklore events in open-air museums in Sierpc, Radom and Kadzidło, reconstructions of battles sometimes weighing the fate of Europe, such as the Miracle at the Vistula near Wołomin, Battle of Ostrołęka, or the Battle of Mława from the time of WWII.
