Where apple trees bloom

Grójec, in medieval times called Grodziec, was one of the most important strongholds of southern Mazovia in the Middle Ages. The city lost its importance after the Swedish Deluge. Nowadays it is the center of a major fruit-growing region. In spring the whole area is flooded with white flowers On this occasion, the last weekend of May in Grójec is when the Feast of Blooming Apple Trees is sumptuously celebrated.

The town preserves very few souvenirs of the past. Located at a large rectangular square is a classicistic town hall, built about 1821 according to the design by Hilary Szpilowski. Leading from the market is Warszawska street, where several other classicistic public buildings are located.  

The parish church of St. Nicholas stands on a hill which is considered to be a remnant of an early medieval settlement. As a result of many modifications the church has lost its original Gothic features. The attractions found inside include a late gothic crucifix, which adorns the bay of the presbytery, and a Gothic baptismal font made of sandstone. The stone features clear traces of sword sharpening. A statue of Piotr Skarga by Andrzej Renes stands in front of the temple. Born in Grójec in 1536, the Jesuit was known for his fiery sermons.
