Góra Kalwaria

Czersk Czersk

Góra Kalwaria (Mount Calvary) so as new Jerusalem is built on cruciform plan, with numerous churches and it was attracting plenty of pilgrims for centuries. At the end of the 18th century it became the capital of the Polish Jews when tzaddik Alter, founder of the Hasidic dynasty of Ger, elected here his domicile. We still can admire his mansion, a house of prayer and ohel, which attract Jews from all over the world. Góra Kalwaria is attractive for tourists not only because of its history, but also thanks to plenty of routes - walking and cycling. You can move from here into Czersk, located three kilometres up to north and see the castle of the Dukes of Mazovia.

Czersk Castle became the historic capital of southern Mazovia in the thirteenth century and the seat of the Dukes of Mazovia. Czersk itself was an urban centre in the fourteenth century and there is still original medieval layout of streets preserved, some of which bear historical names up to date. Stone Gothic castle at the site of the former wooden one was built by Duke Janusz I at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. This is a typical example of a castle-fortress with thick walls and the moat surrounding it. Historic findings of arrowheads and crossbows stand for the evidence of numerous battles in the area. You can see a beautiful church not far from the castle hill and you can stroll around the picturesque Czersk Lake.

On summer weekends there is an inn running and you can visit a historic stall near by. In April Knights Tournament will be held, a two-day event full of historical attractions. Those who are not afraid of the haunting Queen Bona’s ghost can spend night in the tower (bring your own sleeping bag and mat).
